Exploring Todmorden: A Perfect Day Trip by Train
If you’re looking for a relaxing, culture-rich day out by train, Todmorden is a brilliant choice. Located along the Calder Valley Line, it’s just a short ride from towns like Rochdale or Halifax—and for me, it was just a quick 13-minute train journey from Rochdale.
I wasn’t sure what to expect on my first visit, but Todmorden completely surprised me. What I found was a charming market town surrounded by rolling hills, a welcoming community atmosphere, and plenty of interesting things to explore.
Arriving by Train
The journey was quick, scenic, and stress-free. Todmorden Station is centrally located, making it easy to step right into town and start your visit. The moment I arrived, I was struck by the views—green hills in every direction and a feeling of calm that’s hard to find in busier towns.
Market Day Magic
I arrived on a Thursday, which turned out to be the perfect day—Todmorden’s flea market takes place every Thursday alongside its regular market. Wandering among the stalls, I found everything from vintage treasures and collectables to books, tools, and quirky bits you didn’t know you needed.
It’s a great place to chat with locals, pick up a few unique items, and soak up the town’s personality.
A Walk Through Centre Vale Park
After browsing the market, I took a peaceful stroll through Centre Vale Park, a beautiful green space just a few minutes’ walk from the station. The park has wide open lawns, wooded areas, and some interesting landmarks—including the famous Lucky Dog statue, which I couldn’t resist taking a photo with.
One for Next Time: Canal Walk to Hebden Bridge
While I didn’t have time to do the full route on this visit, I learned about the canal-side walk from Todmorden to Hebden Bridge. It’s a favourite with walkers and cyclists and offers beautiful views along the water. I’ll definitely be back to try it—perhaps with a picnic on a sunnier day.
Final Thoughts
Todmorden offers the perfect mix of nature, local life, and easy travel. Whether you’re into markets, peaceful parks, or just want a new place to explore without needing the car, it’s a brilliant choice for a day out.
Take the train, enjoy the journey, and discover a town that’s full of character and heart. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.
