Accessible Travel in Action: Men’s Lab Visit Hebden Bridge
At New Pioneers Project, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to explore, connect and experience new places. Our recent Men’s Lab trip to Hebden Bridge was a fantastic example of how accessible travel can help make that happen.
A group of ten participants, including two wheelchair users and one mobility scooter user, travelled together by train to enjoy a day out in the beautiful West Yorkshire town. Thanks to the support of National Rail staff and Passenger Assist services, the journey was smooth, comfortable and stress-free for everyone involved.
This trip was made possible through our ongoing partnership with Calder Valley Line Community Rail Partnership and the support of Northern. Together, we are helping local residents gain confidence in using public transport and encouraging people to access new opportunities beyond their local area.
Upon arriving in Hebden Bridge, the group enjoyed a leisurely walk along the canal, taking in the scenery, spotting wildlife and sharing plenty of conversation and laughter along the way. The town’s accessible routes and welcoming atmosphere allowed everyone to enjoy the experience at their own pace.
The visit also included time exploring the local market, where participants browsed a variety of stalls and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere. Later, the group visited the Town Hall for a well-earned lunch, providing another opportunity to relax, socialise and connect with one another.
Throughout the day, participants spoke about the positive impact of the trip. They particularly appreciated the ease of travelling by train, the support received from railway staff, the accessibility of Hebden Bridge and, most importantly, the chance to spend quality time together.
A special thank you goes to Duane Murphy, Men’s Lab Leader, for organising and leading another successful trip. His commitment to creating opportunities for people to get out, connect and experience new things continues to make a real difference to the lives of participants.
For many people, these trips are about much more than simply visiting a new place. They help build confidence, reduce social isolation, strengthen friendships and create a sense of belonging within the community.
We are incredibly grateful to our partners for helping make experiences like this possible and we are already looking forward to our next adventure.
